The Floating Gardens of the Aztecs

The Ingenious Floating Gardens of the Aztecs...

When Cortez discovered the Aztec Empire in the year 1519, he found 200,000 people living on an island in the middle of a lake.  Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City, was the biggest and best-fed city in the world, and this fortress city was completely surrounded by water.

To feed their enormous population, the Aztecs ingeniously built chinampas, or floating gardens, to convert the marshy wetlands of Lake Texcoco into arable farmland.  These floating gardens were a masterpiece of engineering.

FOOD GUIDE FOR WAR SERVICE AT HOME PREPARED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE UNITED STATES FOOD  ADMINISTRATION

IN CO-OPERATION WITH
THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
AND THE BUREAU OF EDUCATION

WITH A PREFACE BY HERBERT HOOVER

UNITED STATES FOOD ADMINISTRATOR

1918

"The long war has brought hunger to Europe; some of her peoples stand constantly face to face with starvation.

All agriculture has been seriously interfered with. Food production has been lessened to the point of danger. Millions of men who had given all their time and energy to raising food have been killed; more millions are still fighting; other millions have gone from the farms into the great war-factories.

Women, too, have been drafted from the fields and home gardens into the factories and to replace the absent men in a host of occupations.

Great stretches of once fertile land have been temporarily ruined by the scourge of war; some are still under falling shot and shell.

Belgium and France have lost millions of acres of productive land to the enemy. The fertilizers necessary for keeping up the production of the land still available are lacking...."

FEMA Wargamed Global Food Crisis… The Results Weren’t Pretty.

wheat wikimedia

One of the most frightening scenarios that anyone in the modern world could face, is a global food shortage. It’s one thing when just the country you live in faces a food shortage but  a global food crisis means that there is nowhere to run to.

All that’s left to do is endure for as long as you can, with whatever food you have stocked up and whatever rations the government can provide. Your absolute best case scenario involves living on a self-sufficient property, and very few people have that. And the people who are living self-sufficiently would have to live with the fear of being raided by hungry looters or an opportunistic government.

Food Crisis - The Common Sense Show

food crisis

In one of the most telling interviews ever conducted on The Common Sense Show, Dave interviewed the owner of Numanna Foods, Daniel Brigman, about the importance of storing food in these times of unprecedented trouble.

EBT card troubles are just the beginning. This is a can’t miss interview.

What this interview will teach you is that buying food is not enough, you have to know how to prepare and how to store and eventually how to  hide your food...

EBT Card Outage?: It Is 8 Days Into June And Many Americans Are STILL Waiting For Food Stamp Money

 Image result for ebt card

If you relied on benefits to put food on the table for your family, how would you cope if those benefits were overdue and you didn't know when you were going to get paid?

There are over 40 million people in the USA that depend on  EBT Cards, a food stamp program, which allows the holder of the card to use government allocated credit at participating outlets to buy food... and that system is failing them.

It is reported that it has been over a week since their expected payments were due and retailers are turning people away in droves leaving them hungry and enraged.

http://www.homeandgardeningideas.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/DIY-Rotating-Canned-Food-System.jpg

Storing canned food in your kitchen cabinets is an inefficient use of space and you will often find old cans in the back that have been there for years. This easy-to-build shelf system will solve the problem by rotating the cans. The cost is a small fraction of the price of retail canned food systems. There are many variations, so modify the plans to suit your needs and abilities.

Food Pantry: Take Care of Your Basic Needs

homestead pantry

Some years ago I became aware of the phrases “homesteading” and “prepping” that seemed to suddenly pop up all over the Internet.  I’d only known the words from history books when settlers came out West to lay claim to land by “homesteading” it and harvest time when you needed to “prepare for winter”.  I soon realized these phrases weren’t anything new- my family had always been doing it, but we just called it being poor and needing to make ends meet.  Now suddenly, homesteading and prepping were fashionable!

How The “Dacha Farms” Made Russia Self-Sufficient

It could be said that the people who are the most prepared, are the ones who have just experienced a disaster.

With the pain of a tragedy fresh on their minds, they’re much more willing to prepare for the worst.

You could also apply this observation to nations. Who would doubt that as a nation, America was at it’s most prepared after the Great Depression and World War Two.

When the Trucks Stop Delivering, ‘The System’ Will Collapse

Collectively speaking, most people take for granted the system in place to deliver essential supplies to their area. “The system,” an underlying infrastructure that keeps goods, services and commerce in all countries flowing creates a sense of normalcy and order. Food, water, gasoline and medications are just a few of the items restocked weekly in order for our dependent society to maintain a steady flow. What many fail to grasp is just how fragile the system is and just how quickly it can collapse.

Our transportation systems are one of the weakest links in the system. Mac Slavo explains:

Hurdling: The Secret Food Preservation Technique That Can Add Years To Shelf Life

Food preservation started thousands of years ago and has kept us alive since.

Food hurdling is known by other names, including: combination preservation, barrier technology, combination techniques, combined processes, and combined methods. In some respects, we’ve done it before whenever we do any pickling. Pickling is actually a combination of numerous processes and ingredients that collectively kill bacteria, deter microbial growth, prevent spoilage, and preserve flavor, texture and color. That’s hurdling — combining different methods of preservation. Think of it as creating multiple barriers the pathogen must “hurdle” to spoil the food.

A Mini-Farm in San Francisco

The secret to this productive garden on a small urban lot is enriching the soil with compost and rock powder.Click To Enlarge

Summer Fog Farm began as a clean-up project seven years ago, before an injury forced me to retire early from my job on the Golden Gate ferries. The back yard behind my apartment in San Francisco’s fog-bound Richmond District was so choked with weeds and brush I could hardly fight my way through it. With the help of friends, I started clearing it out one day, and I’ve never looked back.

3 Tips to Ensure Perpetual Food Supply

FoodSupply

The key to survival is preparation, and the consummate prepper is well aware of Sta-Bil, the fuel additive that allows users to store gasoline for a year or more to prevent its highly-refined molecular structure from breaking down and losing octane. The same type of precautions need to be taken to extend the shelf life of food, whether they’re canned or dried.
