Survival garden: What is it and how can I set up one in my home or community?

My wood box (1M x 3m) survival garden planted with collard green, sunflowers, tomatoes, basel, mint, pepper, and cilantro in Worcester, MA

Survival gardens, as the name depict are gardens that are meant to serve as an immediate source of food, nutritional supply and a supplementary source of income for a household. While generating income may not necessarily be the primary motivation for setting up a survival garden, in most developing countries and in situations of refugee camps, it usually turns out to be the case.

Innovative and Comfortable Housing out of Necessity

Using recycled plastic drink bottles, one man has created an entire house.

The story is simple. Out of necessity, finding himself out of work, Alfredo had to live off trash he collects. Like many Argentinians in the beginning of the 2000s he became a “cartonero.” I don’t think his smile can really turn into a frown, but  there’s a hint of  bitterness when he remembers those times: ” We didn’t even have  resources to provide for our families. I couldn’t believe that I wasn’t able to fulfill  this basic task of providing  food for my family, I just couldn’t.”

Develop a Survival Attitude

survival

Survival psychology is a lot more important than you may think. Surviving a combat or SHTF situation isn’t all about what you have in your bug out bag – or even just what survival skills you have. Your attitude can make the difference between living and dying. I’ve experienced first-hand the difference attitude can make in the decision-making process in a high-stress survival situation during several combat deployments. People with poor attitudes make poor decisions. They don’t open their mind up to all the possibilities. Even worse, they develop a defeatist attitude.

Personal Resiliency Paramount for Future Disasters

Personal Resiliency Paramount for Future Disasters

A Mayo Clinic researcher says individuals need to build disaster readiness and resiliency in order to better recover from the effects of earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and other natural disasters. Those who prepare well for disasters are more likely to have a sense of spiritual and emotional well-being and be satisfied with their life.

Youtube - Backyard farmers by necessity: self-sufficient & debt-free

Youtube - Backyard farmers by necessity: self-sufficient & debt-free

Everyone has a story of hardship, if you haven't then it is only a matter of time before you experience it in one form or other.... especially in these times of uncertainty and instability.

Concerns regarding our future, our finances, food and housing, just to name a few, matter a lot... and then of course we all worry about our kids and their future so it is really inspiring to come across a story about someone who, against the odds, and through his own realisation, hardwork and determination has found his own way to cope and deal with his hardships and become financially independant, raise a family, have his own home food security and become debt free in the process....

Every penny counts when you are living on struggle street

Every penny counts when you are living on struggle street

Struggling with your finances and just getting by each day is a growing concern according to The Salvation Army's annual Economic and Social Impact Survey which paints a grim picture of hunger, homelessness and deprivation among Australia's poor.

Almost one-third of the 2500 respondents - clients of the Army's welfare centres - did not have secure housing and 14 per cent were homeless. One-quarter could not afford a decent meal at least once a day and 28 per cent could not afford to heat their houses properly.

He Who Hesitates is Lost: The Psychology of Survival

He Who Hesitates is Lost: The Psychology of Survival

In a worst-case scenario, hesitation kills.

No one wants to accept that something horrible has happened.  The human brain is configured in a way that it is in our very nature to deny that something outside our normal paradigm has occurred. This is called cognitive dissonance.
