Queensland wild weather: BoM warns flash-flooding, powerful wind gusts expected

EWN Significant Weather Forecast Map

Emergency services are on standby with flash-flooding and powerful wind gusts expected to hit south-east Queensland from today, but it will not be as widespread as first predicted.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said a trough was moving faster than expected, slightly reducing the threat of heavy intense rainfall from Fraser Island to Brisbane's northside.

But the bureau warned drenching falls and damaging winds were still set to lash areas from Brisbane's CBD and southern suburbs through to the Gold Coast.

Antarctic melting: Coastal cities 'will have 2-3 meter-high sea defenses by end of century'

10,000yo Antarctic ice shelf will disintegrate in just ‘few years’ – NASA

The unexpectedly rapid melting of a giant glacier in East Antarctica may raise the global sea level at least 2 meters, a new study says, adding that such process may be unstoppable.

The research concentrates on the 150 kilometer-long, 30 kilometer-wide Totten Glacier. The glacier is one of the major outlets for the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, the largest mass of ice on Earth, which covers 98 percent of Antarctica.

Learn How to Survive a Flood with Les Stroud

Oftentimes preppers get carried away with their plans when they prepare for the really scary scenarios, like nuclear war, meteor strikes, pandemics, and solar flares. But for the most part, these are rare events that many of us will never encounter firsthand.

It’s still a good idea to prepare for them, in part because they are so rare. Most people, and the emergency services that will have to help them, aren’t ready for these disasters. So when they do occur, there can be significantly more property damage and loss of life. But we can’t lose sight of the basics. It’s very tempting to focus on the scariest disasters, while ignoring the events that are most likely to effect you, and are statistically more lethal.

Being Prepared means being responsible for your well-being during a disaster... small or large, short term or long term

norcal-storm

The circumstances sound familiar... whether it's bushfires, wild weather, storms, local flooding etc people get caught off-guard and left stranded and unprepared during emergencies and disasters, it doesn't matter where you live in the world the conditions and resulting effects are very similar but how you fare through it will be totally reliant on how you have prepared...
